Soy Milk!

Found a trio of canned soy milk at "759 Ah Shin House".   I love soy milk, especially when its in such awesome packaging, has black soybean version and uses non-gmo soybeans.

Food that you must try at Hong Kong

Started with a quick visit to Cha Chaan Tan (A hk style cafe) for a quick classic pineapple bun with butter.  The hot crispy bun has a soft spongy interior and comes served with an ice cold slice of butter.  Definitely a must try especially for people who lik butter :) yum

Next, I went over to Mong Kok and walked past an old time favourite of mine, a street food snack stall.  This store serves skewers based on a soy sauce based sauce, where different cuts of meat are served with the light sauce, hoisin sauce and mustard.   Its very cheap for the skewers, coming to a total of approximately 23 HKD for three skewers.  These are by no means meant to fill you up, buts its great for a snack, much better than those same old hot dog stands.   Definitely worth a try if you are up for some exotic flavours in street food, or you can walk around the corner for all the fish balls, beef balls and the traditional snakcs!

Hong Kong Breakfast?

Thought i would start with a classic chinese breakfast. Dim Sum from this Michelin Star place near Sham Shui Po: Tim Ho Wan. It was great dim sum at a great price.  The food tasted great, not amazing but still better than most places in Toronto, and at 13-25 HKD ( 2-3 CAD ), it is well worth the price.   Had to finish off with a cup of HK style milk tea as well.

A perfect start to my first day in HK!. :)

Hong Kong Trip

Hong Kong is an interesting place for me to go to. As one of my friends put it, going back to Hong Kong isn't a vacation, it is going back Home.  Its been a while since I have been back, and a lot has changed.   This time, I'm going to try and explore as much of it as I can, and experience as many parts of Hong Kong as I can.

Let the exploration begin!   Meanwhile, gotta bunker down and take that 16 hour flight first.

Coconut Red Bean and Coconut Papaya Dessert

Chinese dessert tends to be fruits, or hot soups, or biscuits of some sort. Ask anyone who's been to a traditional Chinese meal, they always serve a fruit/biscuit platter with some hot dessert soup. On the rare occasion, you get those meals where they serve this coconut milk pudding with papaya. Its one of the ways you can get me to eat a papaya haha. The coconut flavour mixed with papaya is godly.

My family, namely my mom, is a master experimenter. She always manages to recreate things I like with a good degree of accuracy, and she decided to recreate this dish along with a another version where red bean and coconut milk was used.

The milk pudding was basically milk + coconut cream + gelatin mixture. The exact ratios determine the consistency of the final product. The finally cosistency should be creamy like panna cotta but a bit sturdier to ensure it won't mush up when cut into. Experiment a bit to get the right ratio, I don't have this handy untill we recreate it next time. The mixture is then filled into a hollowed out papaya to set in the fridge.

The red bean pudding was a similar mixture with red bean paste mixed in. It was set in a square container which was then taken out of for plating. The red bean paste used was made with red beans manually. It was made with whole Azuki red beans boiled down slowly, mashed and sugared to taste.

Overall, I preferred the red bean pudding more because I am not a big fan of papaya, but these were definitely an interesting dessert to try out.
